Gooey Chocolate Pear Pudding

I first saw this recipe on Come Dine with Me – yes I watch it, and I love it, judge me if you will – I’ve since seen that the ever lovely Ms Nigella has a very similar recipe, though I’m guessing she didn’t get it from Come Dine with Me?? I have increased the amount of cocoa powder used and added chocolate chips to make it, if possible, even more chocolately and I’m afraid I use salted butter.

Ingredients (serves 6)

125g plain flour

125g caster sugar

40g cocoa

1 tsp baking powder

¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda

150g lightly salted butter, softened

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 eggs

2x 411g can pear halves in syrup

Handful dark chocolate chips or broken dark chocolate pieces (optional)


Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4.

Sift the cocoa, sugar and flour into a bowl with baking powder and bicarb of soda. Beat the eggs and add into the bowl with the vanilla, and butter and whisk till smooth.

Drain the pears and put them in a small pie dish or roasting tin. Pour the mixture on top and sprinkle with the dark chocolate chips.

Cook for 20 minutes. It should be crisp on the outside and melting in the middle, creating it’s own chocolate sauce. Serve hot with vanilla ice-cream.
